History of HIPS

The Beginnings
From its small and early beginnings in 1892, Holy Innocents Primary School has grown to be a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) primary school in 1992. Through each obstacle faced along the school’s journey, it has provided a learning point for the school to lay the foundation and build the framework to continually evolve and improve to finally become what it is in the present day. Established in 1892, Holy Innocents Primary School first started as Holy Innocents’ High School, a Chinese medium mission school. In 1932, the Holy Innocents’ Chinese Girls’ School was founded. In 1985, Holy Innocents’ Primary School was proudly formed through the amalgamation of the primary section of Holy Innocents’ High School and Holy Innocents’ Chinese Girls’ School, and the co-educational school moved to its present premises.

The Amalgamation
The management board of the two schools and the representative of the Ministry of Education met on 14 November l984. During the meeting, it was agreed that the two schools, Holy Innocents’ High (Primary section) and Holy Innocents’ Chinese Girls’ School would merge to become one school. It was decided to set up the newly Holy Innocents’ Primary School at the premises of a new school building then called “Shude” School. It is under the management of the Management Board of the Holy Innocents’ High School.

Mr Lee Soon Hock, a representative of the Ministry of Education handed over the building to the most Reverend Gregory Yong, the Archbishop of Singapore on January l985. The most Reverend Gregory Yong, Archbishop of Singapore officiated at the blessing of the school on 10 May l985. The school started functioning on 25 March l985 with Miss Goh Boon How as the Principal and Madam Tan Hock Neo as the Vice-Principal. Mr Jimmy Tan took over as the principal from 1998 – 2001. Mrs Doris Sum took over the reins from 2002 – 2009. The current principal of Holy Innocents Primary School is Mdm Quek Seok Noi.

As with the school’s mission to being “committed to nurture the potential in each child to the fullest and develop his character in a God-centred environment so as to prepare him for the challenges of the future and to serve the nation”, the HIPS community will continue to function as one family to be a beacon of light and hope to the community and to the country.
